Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge is under fire after dismissing viral footage of a violent attack on White jazz festival attendees by a Black mob, claiming the videos are being taken “out of context.” Her remarks have triggered outrage online—especially from Elon Musk, who weighed in, calling on her to either clarify or resign.
The incident, which took place early Saturday morning in downtown Cincinnati, shows a group of Black assailants viciously beating a White man and woman. The footage quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), drawing comments not just from Musk but also from Vice President J.D. Vance, who labeled the attack “disgusting” and “a mob of lawless thugs beating up an innocent person.”
During a Monday press conference, Theetge attempted to downplay the incident, accusing social media and mainstream news outlets of distorting events:
“Social media, the posts that we’ve seen, does not depict the entire incident. That is one version of what occurred,” she said. “Social media and mainstream media… their commentaries are misrepresentations of the circumstances, which makes our job more difficult.”
When pressed by reporters to explain exactly what was “distorted,” Theetge dodged the question, offering no clear answers.
Musk responded bluntly:
“Either she answers the question or she should resign.”
If this garbage persists, federal funding must be cut. The group should face hate crime charges. A mob of Blacks brutally attacked a white man and woman at the Cincinnati Jazz Festival. The controversy comes as Theetge faces a discrimination lawsuit from within her own department. Multiple White captains and lieutenants have accused her of favoritism, claiming women and minorities received “career-enhancing” assignments over equally qualified White male officers. Local news outlet WLWT5 reported that 89% of female lieutenants and 79% of minority lieutenants received preferred assignments compared to just 44% of White male lieutenants.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights division, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, is reportedly monitoring the investigation.
Musk’s sharp reaction also highlights a deeper issue: the tendency of public officials to sidestep racially motivated violence by framing it as “misinterpreted” or “taken out of context.” Chief Theetge’s remarks, which almost dismiss the severity of the attacks as social media exaggeration, have fueled criticism that she is trying to protect a political narrative rather than confront the reality of what occurred. With five individuals now charged, the refusal to acknowledge what appears on camera—violent assaults targeting White festival-goers—has raised questions about whether the city’s leadership is willing to address the racial dynamics of these crimes. This mirrors Musk’s own comments about why he left South Africa, citing racial tensions and violent attacks that authorities often downplayed or failed to control.

Why Musk’s Reaction Hits Close to Home
Musk has long been outspoken about racial politics, and this latest incident echoes his personal history. He has previously noted that racial tensions and violent crime in South Africa were key reasons he left the country. Musk has warned repeatedly that downplaying violence or ignoring racial dynamics, as Theetge appears to be doing, is a dangerous path.
Quick facts:
Five people have been charged, though their names have not been released.
Mayor Aftab Pureval called the violence “horrifying” and said it clashes with Cincinnati’s inclusive image.
Police response details: Officers arrived within 6 minutes of the 911 call (3:06 a.m.), but the fight had already ended.
Theetge blamed alcohol as a major factor and criticized bystanders for filming instead of calling police.
Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Kearney also condemned the violence, emphasizing that 90,000 visitors attended peacefully overall.
Witness videos show people being chased, punched, and stomped.
Vance’s stronger quote: “A grown man who sucker punches a middle-aged woman… oughta go to jail for a very long time.”
The Cincinnati attack, combined with the police chief’s dismissive response, mirrors the kind of environment Musk has said he fled: one where ideology and racial favoritism can overshadow basic law and order.
“What the hell is happening in Cincinnati?” is now the question being asked across social media as the backlash grows.
