Plastic waste and its impact on climate change have become urgent issues, with experts emphasizing the need for new strategies to combat the growing problem. According to JD Ambati, Founder and CEO of EverestLabs, plastic production contributes to 1.6 billion tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually, yet only about 2% of all plastic waste is currently recycled. This staggering statistic reflects the enormity of the challenge in addressing the environmental impacts of plastic, while pointing to an important solution: extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation.
“Plastic production and waste represent part of climate change’s root cause, with plastic production contributing to 1.6 billion tons of GHG emissions, and roughly 2% of that gets recycled,” Ambati explains. “Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation holds CPG (consumer packaged goods) brands accountable for creating more sustainable solutions.” The concept behind EPR is simple: companies that produce plastic should be responsible for its end-of-life disposal, thereby incentivizing sustainable design and reducing environmental damage. However, effective change will require more than policy—it will need technology and collective industry effort.
The Scope of the Plastic Problem
Plastic is a double-edged sword. It has revolutionized industries and made consumer goods more accessible, but its widespread use has also led to a waste management crisis. Most plastic is derived from fossil fuels, and the manufacturing process generates significant carbon emissions. With the current rate of production expected to triple by 2050, plastic waste will continue to be a substantial contributor to climate change unless drastic changes are made.
Recent studies show that about 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the oceans annually, wreaking havoc on marine ecosystems and posing risks to human health. Even as the world grapples with reducing carbon emissions and moving toward renewable energy, the role of plastic waste in accelerating climate change is often overlooked.
EPR Legislation: Pushing Companies to Take Responsibility
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies aim to address this issue by shifting the burden of waste management from governments and taxpayers to the producers. Under EPR, manufacturers are incentivized to design products that are easier to recycle, use fewer materials, or contain less harmful substances. The goal is to reduce waste at the source and make recycling systems more efficient.
Countries like Canada and several European nations have already implemented EPR programs with some success. In Canada, for example, EPR policies have led to higher recycling rates and reduced reliance on landfills. However, implementing EPR in the U.S. has proven more challenging, with inconsistent regulations across states and strong resistance from industries accustomed to operating under a more lenient regulatory framework.
“Climate change is not just going to reverse itself,” says Ambati. “Companies have to work together to go back to the drawing board and find new ways to be sustainable and meet the needs of their consumers.” He emphasizes that voluntary corporate initiatives will not be enough to make a meaningful impact without robust legislation to support them.
The Role of Technology in Addressing Plastic Waste
As companies face increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices, many are turning to technology to help meet their goals. Technologies such as AI, robotics, and data analytics are proving to be valuable tools in the fight against plastic waste. These technologies provide companies with insights into the recyclability of their packaging, helping them identify areas for improvement and optimize the design of their products.
“Today, technologies that provide automation and data, such as robotics and AI, are able to support these sustainability efforts,” Ambati explains. “They provide companies with data on whether their packaging is getting recycled and which informs how best to optimize packaging design and material.” EverestLabs, for instance, uses AI-powered robotics to improve sorting accuracy at recycling facilities, ensuring that more plastic is recycled and less ends up in landfills or oceans.
In addition to improving sorting processes, AI and data analytics can help companies track the lifecycle of their packaging, from production to disposal. This level of transparency is crucial for brands seeking to understand the environmental impact of their products and for regulators to ensure compliance with EPR policies.
The Need for a Multi-Pronged Approach
While technology and legislation are crucial, experts agree that solving the plastic waste problem will require a multi-faceted approach. Public awareness campaigns, changes in consumer behavior, and industry collaboration are also necessary to achieve meaningful progress. Many consumers remain unaware of what types of plastic can be recycled or the importance of reducing plastic use in daily life.
Furthermore, recycling infrastructure varies widely across regions, creating disparities in the effectiveness of waste management. For EPR and technology-driven solutions to succeed, investment in recycling infrastructure and standardization of recycling practices will be essential.
Organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation are advocating for a circular economy where materials are reused and recycled in a closed loop, reducing the need for virgin plastic production. According to the foundation, moving to a circular economy could cut plastic waste by 80% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2040.
The Path Forward
Addressing the root causes of plastic waste and its role in climate change is a complex challenge that will require collective action across sectors. While EPR policies and technologies such as AI and robotics offer promising solutions, their impact will be limited without broad regulatory support and changes in both industry practices and consumer habits.
There is no single “magic bullet” for solving the plastic problem, but with coordinated efforts from companies, policymakers, and consumers, there is hope for a more sustainable future.
