Japan’s Destroyer Market Analysis | US$ 2.4 Billion Growth by 2031

Japan Destroyer Market

Japan Destroyer Market Study

Japan’s Destroyer Market reached US$ 1.7 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 2.4 billion by 2031, growing with a CAGR of 4.40% during the forecast period 2024-2031.

A Japan Destroyer Market refers to a class of highly advanced and agile naval warships primarily designed for defense, surveillance, and combat missions. These destroyers are equipped with cutting-edge technology, including advanced radar systems, missile defense capabilities, and anti-submarine warfare tools. Japan’s destroyers are built to defend its territorial waters and project power in maritime conflicts, with modern designs offering high maneuverability, speed, and versatility.

Japan’s destroyers are key assets in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), contributing to regional security and peacekeeping efforts. Their sophisticated weaponry and multi-role capabilities make them crucial in both defense operations and peacekeeping missions, especially in areas with rising maritime tensions. With a focus on innovation and modernization, Japan continues to enhance its destroyer fleet to stay ahead in naval warfare capabilities.

Market Growth Drivers

Geopolitical Tensions and National Security Concerns

Japan’s geopolitical landscape, especially in the Indo-Pacific region, highlights the growing need for advanced destroyers. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), North Korea had approximately 20 nuclear weapons and enough fissile material to create 45 to 55 nuclear devices by January 2022. Since conducting its first nuclear test in 2006, North Korea has carried out six tests, with the explosion yield steadily increasing—from less than 1 kiloton in the first test to 160 kilotons in the sixth.

In East Asia, the power dynamics are rapidly shifting, with China gaining influence. According to SIPRI, between 2013 and 2022, U.S. defense spending grew by 2.7%, while China’s defense budget surged by 63% in the same period. Despite these increases, the U.S. remained the global leader in defense expenditure, spending US$ 877 billion in 2022, while China ranked second with US$ 292 billion. However, it’s important to note that while the U.S. military has a global presence, China’s military remains largely focused on regional engagement.

Government Defense Policies and Budgets

In 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) officially signed contracts for the construction of two new naval destroyers, which will be equipped with the advanced AEGIS air warfare battle management system. These new ships, known as Aegis System Equipped Vessels (ASEVs), are set to be commissioned in 2027 and 2028.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) has allocated JPY 272.1 billion (US$ 1.89 billion) for the construction of two new destroyers. The first contract, worth JPY 139.7 billion, was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), while the second, valued at JPY 132.4 billion, went to Japan Marine United Corp. MHI is set to deliver its vessel by 2027, with Japan Marine’s vessel expected the following year. Japan’s defense policies and rising budgets are directly fueling the destroyer market, driving the procurement, modernization, and integration of advanced technologies.

Key Development

In 2024, Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) selected Rolls-Royce’s MT30 engines for its Aegis System-equipped vessels, marking the world’s first use of twin MT30-powered hybrid electro-mechanical propulsion. This advanced propulsion system ensures that the new destroyers meet the speed requirements of the JMSDF while providing additional operational advantages.

Additionally, Japan has allocated 314.8 billion yen (US$ 2 billion) in 2024 for the development of three 4,800-ton FFM multi-purpose compact destroyers, planned for 2025. These ships are designed with advanced automation and labor-efficient designs, requiring only 90 crew members—less than half the number needed for current models. This cutting-edge platform is also being considered as a potential option for Australia’s next-generation frigates.
