As a business owner, one thing you’ll always need to keep in mind – and more than that, one thing you’ll always have to do constantly – is stay competitive and relevant. That’s not always an easy thing to do, especially if you happen to work in a market where there are lots of businesses just like yours; one slip up and you’ll be forgotten about.
Although there are a few different ways you can stay competitive and in your customers’ minds over and above anyone else is to bring in new technology to your business so you’re as up-to-date as you can be. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been around or who long you’ve been doing things in a certain way; if something better comes along that will make your job easier and your customers happier, that’s definitely something you need to incorporate into your processes.
The question is how. If you’ve been used to doing things the way you do them, how can you add new tech to the process? Plus, if your customers are happy, is it really a good idea to change the status quo, even if it could make them happier in the future? These are great questions, and they’re important to think about, so let’s take a look at how to add new tech to your business.

Start Small
It might be tempting to have a look at the kind of tech that’s out there and grab it all, throwing it at your business and hoping it will work. If you try that, some of it will stick – it’s the law of averages – but the majority of it won’t, and that’s going to mean you’re wasting your time, effort, and, perhaps most importantly as a business owner, your money. There’s just no point in trying too much at once for these reasons and the fact that you’re not going to know exactly what’s helping and what’s harming your business.
The best advice we can offer is to start small, and just try one new thing at a time. That way, you can really make sure it’s the best piece of equipment or software for your business, and you can ensure that you’re able to focus on testing, measuring, and learning it. You’ll also know it’s precisely what you’re looking for, rather than something that half fits the bill but that isn’t quite right.
See What You’ve Got
One of the things that can worry business owners when it comes to trying new tech is how it’s literally going to fit in with what they’re currently doing. Getting a new piece of software, for example, is all very well, but if you’ve not got anything to use it on or no one knows how it works or you have to essentially start from scratch in order to use it how it’s meant to be used, why get it at all?
It’s actually a safer idea to look for new tech that can easily integrate with the systems you already use. Meditech integration is a great example – it’s a new piece of tech that you can use for many reasons within your medical business, but it links easily with the cloud and other programs so you can just add it to what you’re already doing and move forward from there. The more tech like that you can find for your own needs, the smoother the switch will be – your team will definitely appreciate it.
Involve Your Team
You’ll see we mentioned your team just now, and they’re a much more important part of adding tech to your existing business than you might have thought. The fact is that if they’re the ones who are going to be using the equipment, software, or anything else, they really ought to have some kind of say about it.
You don’t necessarily have to get their permission to get up-to-date technology for your business – you are the boss, after all – but it isn’t a bad idea to hold a meeting and discuss the idea with them to get their feedback and gauge their reaction (positive or negative, it’s going to help you make a decision or, if a decision has already been made, it’s going to help when it comes to implementation because you’ll already know the qualms people have).
This is also the ideal time to ask about any tech they feel would be helpful for them in the future – although you’ll be doing plenty of research, you can’t know everything, and if someone else does, it’s wise to listen. You won’t be able to implement all their ideas, but it could be that a few will work, so it’s always good to ask.
