When you’re ready to install a fence on your property, you’ll have to choose the right fencing material for the job. Many options are available on the market today, so it’s essential to do your research before deciding. To help you out, we’ve asked a Louisiana fence contractor to weigh in on the pros and cons of different fencing materials.
Kip McDonald, Primescape Construction Owner and his Family
We’ve enlisted the help of Kip McDonald with Primescape Fence and Stain. A Watson, Louisiana Fence Contractor with over 15 years of experience in the field, Kip has installed all types of fences for both residential and commercial customers. He’s seen it all when it comes to fencing materials, so we knew he would be the perfect person to ask about the pros and cons of each type.
Here’s what Kip had to say:
Wooden Fences
Wooden fences are popular for many homeowners, as they provide a natural look and can be stained or painted to match your home’s exterior. Wood is also relatively easy to work with, so it’s a good option for do-it-yourselfers.
However, wooden fences require more maintenance than other types of fences. They need to be stained or painted every few years to keep them looking their best, and they’re also susceptible to damage from weather and insects.
“It seems like wood is everyone’s go-to choice for fences these days,” Kip said. “But people need to realize that wood fences require a lot of upkeep. If you’re not willing to put in the work, you might be better off choosing a different type of fence.”
“Unfortunately, because of the increase in wood prices, we’ve seen an uptick in companies using subpar lumber to build fences,” Kip continued. “As a result, we’re seeing a lot of fences that are falling apart prematurely. So, when you’re considering wood, make sure you’re working with a reputable company that uses high-quality lumber.”
Vinyl (PVC) Fences
Vinyl fences have become increasingly popular in recent years thanks to their low maintenance requirements. Unlike wood fences, vinyl fences don’t need to be stained or painted, and they’re not susceptible to damage from weather or insects.
“Vinyl is a great choice for people who want a fence that will look good without a lot of work,” Kip said. “It’s also a good choice if you live in an area with severe weather conditions, as it won’t be damaged by high winds or heavy rains.”
However, vinyl fences can be more expensive than other types of fences, and they’re not always the best choice for do-it-yourselfers.
“Vinyl is a little trickier to work with than wood, so I wouldn’t recommend it for people who are doing the installation themselves,” Kip said. “It’s also more expensive, so you’ll need to factor that into your budget.”
“Again, wood prices are on the rise, so vinyl might not be as expensive as it once was compared to wood,” Kip continued. “But it’s still more expensive than other fencing materials, so you need to decide if it’s worth the investment.”
Aluminum Fences
Aluminum fences are a good choice for people who want the look of wrought iron without the high price tag. Aluminum fences are also low maintenance, as they won’t rust or corrode like iron fences.
“Aluminum is a great choice for people who want an elegant fence without the high price tag,” Kip said. “It’s also low maintenance, so you won’t have to worry about it rusting or corroding.”
However, aluminum fences can be more expensive than other types of fences, and they’re not always the best choice for do-it-yourselfers.
“Aluminum is a little trickier to work with than wood, so I wouldn’t recommend it for people who are doing the installation themselves,” Kip said. “It’s also more expensive, so you’ll need to factor that into your budget.”
Chain Link Fences
Chain link fences are a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties. They’re affordable, easy to install, and low maintenance.
“Chain link fences are a great choice for people who want an affordable, low-maintenance fence,” Kip said. “They’re also easy to install, so they’re a good option for do-it-yourselfers.”
However, chain link fences are not as attractive as other types of fences, and they’re not always the best choice for residential properties.
“Chain link fences are great for commercial applications, but they’re not always the best choice for residential properties,” Kip said. “If you’re looking for a fence that will add to the curb appeal of your home, you might want to choose a different type of fence.”
McDonald adds, “If you want more privacy, like for around a swimming pool or backyard, you might want to choose a different type of fence.”
The Bottom Line
Kip’s advice is to carefully consider all of your options before choosing a fence. Make sure to factor in the cost, the maintenance required, and the fence’s appearance before making your final decision.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to fences,” Kip said. “You need to carefully consider all of your options and decide which fence is best for your specific needs.”
