Endswell Advances Carbon-Neutral Funeral Care in Durham NC and the Triangle

Durham, North Carolina
A funeral home based in Hillsborough and serving Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh is working toward a goal that remains rare in the death-care industry, becoming one of the first carbon-neutral funeral homes in the United States.

Endswell Funeral Home, founded by Hunter Beattie and Veronica Penn Beattie, is positioning itself at the center of a broader shift in how families across North Carolina approach funeral planning, cremation, aquamation, and environmentally responsible burial options.

During a recent interview and site visit, the owners described how sustainability, transparency, and education have shaped their approach to funeral services in the Triangle.

A Modern Funeral Home Serving Durham and the Triangle

Although Endswell is physically located in Hillsborough, the funeral home serves families throughout Durham NC, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and surrounding communities. The founders emphasize that regional access matters, especially as families search for alternatives to traditional burial and flame cremation.

Durham and Raleigh residents increasingly ask about green burial, aquamation, and lower-impact cremation options. Availability across North Carolina remains limited, particularly for aquamation, which requires specialized licensing and equipment.

Endswell is currently the only funeral home in the Triangle offering aquamation on site.

Aquamation as an Eco-Friendly Alternative to Cremation

Aquamation, also referred to as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, uses water, heat, and alkaline compounds rather than flame to return the body to its natural elements. The process produces no direct carbon emissions and requires less energy than traditional cremation.

“By not burning the body, we do not release toxic or carcinogenic gases,” Hunter Beattie said during the interview. “There is no carbon emission from the process itself, which makes it a more environmentally responsible option. Many families also see it as a gentler process.”

In North Carolina, aquamation is regulated under the same authorization requirements as cremation. Despite its legality, few facilities currently offer it, leaving many Durham and Raleigh families unaware it is an option.

From Renewable Energy to Funeral Care

Before entering the funeral industry, both founders worked in nonprofit and renewable energy sectors. The idea for Endswell emerged in early 2022 after Hunter Beattie read about Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s choice of aquamation.

“That moment connected environmental responsibility with death care in a way I had not seen before,” he said. “Within weeks, we decided to pursue a funeral home that aligned with those values.”

Without prior funeral industry backgrounds, the couple focused on building a licensed, full-service funeral home that included cremation, aquamation, green burial, and traditional burial services under one roof.

Green Burial and Conservation-Based Cemeteries

In addition to aquamation and cremation, Endswell supports green and natural burial throughout central North Carolina. Green burial avoids embalming chemicals and uses biodegradable caskets or shrouds rather than metal or concrete containers.

Endswell assists with many natural burials at Bluestem Conservation Cemetery, a protected burial ground designed to preserve native ecosystems.

Jeff Masten, co-director of Bluestem, noted that both organizations began operations around the same time, which allowed for early collaboration.

“We want people to understand they have choices,” Masten said. “This is not about replacing traditional practices. It is about expanding options for families in our community.”

Education as a Core Service

Beyond funeral and cremation services, Endswell regularly hosts community information sessions focused on end-of-life planning, aquamation, green burial, and funeral law in North Carolina.

Veronica Penn Beattie described education as a critical gap in the funeral industry.

“Our goal is to be a community resource, not only at the moment of death,” she said. “Many families do not know what their options are. The industry has historically avoided open conversations about death, and that creates confusion and stress.”

By addressing questions before families are in crisis, the funeral home aims to normalize planning and reduce uncertainty around cremation, burial, and eco-friendly funeral options in Durham and the Triangle.

Federal Grant Supports Carbon-Neutral Goal

Endswell’s sustainability efforts recently expanded through a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Energy for America Program. The reimbursable grant supports renewable energy and energy efficiency projects for rural businesses.

According to Hunter Beattie, the grant will cover 50 percent of the cost of a $150,000 solar installation currently underway at the funeral home.

The solar array, mounted on both the rooftop and parking areas, is designed to offset electricity used for aquamation services and related operations.

“It will offset all electricity associated with aquamation and green burial logistics, including transportation,” Beattie said. “Because we use electric vehicles and charge them onsite, this moves those services toward full carbon neutrality.”

Implications for Durham, Raleigh, and North Carolina Funeral Care

As Durham and Raleigh continue to grow, demand for environmentally responsible services extends beyond housing and transportation into funeral planning. Observers note that death care has been slower to evolve despite changing public values.

Endswell’s approach highlights how funeral homes can combine regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and transparency while serving multiple communities across the Triangle.

Whether carbon-neutral funeral care becomes more widespread in North Carolina remains to be seen. What is clear is that families in Durham NC, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Raleigh are asking more questions, and providers willing to meet those questions with clarity and education are shaping the future of the industry.
