The rise of the binge watching phenomenon has significantly influenced how TV shows are designed and produced. This series, following the life of Amy Jollicoe, a deeply flawed and frustrated woman whose emotional breakdown at the fancy corporate firm she works at awakes in her a sudden desire to obtain personal enlightenment. Starring Laura Dern, this series is fun and captivating but it is also brave, highly political and sometimes uncomfortably real.

Parks and Recreation

This quickly evolving series is great to binge-watch exactly because its characters and their circumstances keep changing in dynamic and engaging ways. Of the more important characters, Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope, a mid-level bureaucrat who wishes to help a nurse convert an old construction site into a community park, is one of the main attractions of the series. The series starts off rather rocky but over time it has developed into a very popular American sitcom with compassion for its characters and their ever-changing life circumstances.

Stranger Things 

The structure of Stranger Things is different from most other series: it is more filmatic in nature in that it is made up of longer and fewer episodes that run as a whole instead of as independent episodes. The series follows a group of young kids in 1980s Indiana as they witness supernatural encounters and secret government exploits. Each series is seen as a film which makes it so satisfying to watch. Creator, Matt and Ross Duffer intended it that way. Stranger Things is a series that is meant to be binge-watched.

The Boys

This superhero series is not what you would expect. This network drama is set in a world where superheroes not only exist, they are treated as celebrities. Drunk with power, the superheros are involved in rather dubious and atrocious activities with no consideration for the consequences of their actions. They’re out of control, but there’s a group of people with deep-routed grudges against the superheroes that fuel their mission to stop them. This dark, funny and violent series is based on a comic of the same name, it follows the boys as they fight against a superhero team known as The Seven, but it also directly confronts themes like capitalism, fame and sexual misconduct.

GLOW

The concept behind this Netflix Original is quite unique, it follows the life of an emerging professional wrestling promotion called the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling as women from all walks of life try their luck at an audition for a part. The series follows a theatre nerd trying to make it in show business and a former soap opera actress who quickly becomes the star of the wrestling event. The series is fun to watch if you are up for a good laugh, it does not lose focus of the plot and the characters are an absolute joy to watch.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is one of the most joyous series currently on TV. This Canadian sitcom follows the story of a wealthy family who loses everything after being defrauded by their business manager. This delightful series keeps viewers laughing as the family is forced to move into a shabby motel father Eugene Levy bought for his son years prior as a joke. Slowly they start to accept their new lives and their town in spite of its little odd quirks. It is an extremely forward-thinking series that’s perfect if you’re in the mood for a good laugh.

This series is perfect for crime series lovers. Based on a novel by Thomas Harris of the same name, this series has brought to life the unique, deeply bonded pair, Dr. Hannibal Lecter and criminal profiler Will Graham. Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy take on the roles of a forensic psychiatrist and a criminal profiler of the FBI’s Behavioral Science unit, together they set off to investigate a string of murders committed by an unknown serial killer. However, their relationship becomes tense and complicated once Will starts suspecting Hannibal of being involved in the murders. Three seasons down, this series is a crime mystery, a twisted psychological thriller romance and one of scariest horrors you’ve ever seen all rolled into one. This mystery crime drama is David Lynch’s landmark network series and one of his more personal works, and like many of his other works, it’s got a healthy dose of surrealism. The series follows an FBI agent as he travels to a small town called Twins Peak to investigate the murder of a seemingly innocent high school student. But as we already know, nothing is as it seems. Behind the eerie visuals and the glittering madness, this series is emotionally affecting and deceptively deep. You would not want to put it down.

This old school crime story is brilliant. How do we know this Upload is a binge-worthy series? Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office and Parks and Recreation is the creator of this series. Daniels combines his clever comedy and romance in this series set in the near-future where human beings can upload their consciousness into a digital afterlife, but only if they can afford it. The series follows a programmer who dies and after uploading his consciousness, he struggles to adjust to his new afterlife, his feelings for his still-living girlfriend and the bugging idea that he was murdered. It’s a romance, a comedy and a mystery in one go. It’s like The Good Place, but a science fiction version.

The Expanse

This series is easily one of the most complex yet rewarding science fiction series to date. Castle Rock 

This series is a tribute to the master of horror, Steven Spielberg by relaying the stories within his created works, featuring his most infamous characters, locations and natural forces. It is not a cut-and-dry adaptation of Spielberg’s work, it is an original series that makes viewers feel they’ve stepped into pages of Spielberg’s work. It is a dark mystery set in a small mysterious town and starts with the strange disappearance of a young boy in 1991. This is a must-watch for Spielberg fans, you’ll find yourself struggling to keep tabs on the story and character references.

True Detective (Season 1)

This truly gripping crime detective anthology has everyone guessing who the killer may be. Set in Louisiana, this crime drama follows two trouble detectives as they look back on their investigation of some gruesome murders in the town. Binge-watching this intense crime series can very quickly start to feel like an emotional rollercoaster but it is definitely worth it. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould are masters of long-format storytelling. This series follows a high school chemistry professor as he reinvents himself into a drug kingpin. It is a very cleverly crafted series with each season feeling like a tightly-contained story that viewers know is part of a bigger plot. The Wire

The Wire was specifically designed for viewers to binge-watch, regardless of long season breaks and periods between filming, this series kept viewers hooked throughout.  Set in Baltimore, this series covers all kinds of issues plaguing everyday society: poverty, drug abuse, violence, murder and let’s not forget corruption. Binge-watching Rick and Morty should be done with caution. It is painfully funny and surprising and will leave you laughing on the floor, but we must always remember too much of a good thing is never good. This hardcore science fiction animated series has sharp and dark humour and based on a concept that will blow anybody’s mind. Following the crazy interstellar adventures of a genius scientist and his young grandson is not all it’s about. The series consist of complex arcs, engaging content and sometimes completely twisted. But once you start, you won’t be able to stop. It’s that good.

We all know that Game of Thrones is one of the most binge-worthy series we’ve seen to date, with people all over the world counting down the minutes to the next episode, and months to the next series. This series had everyone hooked. Based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series, this high fantasy drama about political rivalries, royal blood, unexpected deaths and possible apocalyptic end to the world has shocked viewers around the world for years. Directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ adaption of the book series has fantastic attention to detail and more cliffhangers than we can count, they truly know how to keep us salivating for the next one.

Weeds was around before the rise of the binge-watching culture. This dark comedy about a suburban single mother who resorts to selling weed to bulk up her source of income. The series takes unexpected twists focusing as much on the plot as the characters, it is always a novel funny watch.

Fleabag 

This series about a woman who has difficulty in London’s dating world cleverly avoids all the typical tropes of the genre, that’s what makes it so good. The series is honest and emotional, and aside from dealing with her dating troubles, the series also has a darker side as she is trying to deal with the unexpected death of her best friend. The series is smart and funny, and season two is even better,

Westworld 

This series was tantalizingly good when we had to wait a week between episodes, but now that we are able to rewatch it without any breaks we can better appreciate the twisting time-bending narrative. A combination of science fiction and fantasy, this series is set in an Old West theme park where robots are used to serve humans and meet their darkest requests and desires. With HBO’s signature sex and death spectacles and a heavy dose of complex brain twisters, this is one you will be watching for a week straight. You wouldn’t want to wait.

Veronica Mars

This teen drama is surprisingly good, but with a director like Rob Thomas who keeps his series firmly planted in reality and outstanding performances by the likes of Kristen Bell, it’s no wonder this series is such a hit. Kristen Bell plays a high-school teacher who feels like an outcast in her community. The series is filled with compelling mysteries as Veronica decides to help her P.I. father as he investigates the rich and famous in her community.

The Haunting of Hill House

The director of Hush and Gerald’s Game, Mike Flanagan has pushed the boundaries once more with this ghost story inspired by Shirley Jackson’s seminal ghost story. The series does not take on the narrative of Jackson’s work but instead focuses on the troubled and haunted lives of the Crain family. The series jumps between from one time period to another, simultaneously following the summer the Crain family spent in a haunted mansion and the years of grief and sorrow they experience after that summer. Flanagan’s successfully intertwined well-composed scares, emotional revelations and moments of pure horror into the tale of family hidden with tragedy. It is a moving and honest portrayal that will keep you up at night.

Russian Doll

This is one interesting series. The series entraps its viewers in an endless loop with the lead character, Nadia, a woman who dies the night of her birthday party but wakes up time and time again to relive the very same night (and her death). This series is cheeky and provocative yet deadly serious at times, it offers viewers a look into the destructive cycles people find themselves in and the need for empathy and forgiveness to move forward. This comedy is truly heartfelt but hilarious.

Skins (UK)

This series started out wanting to portray teenagers as they truly were in their own lives with all the hormones, the parties and all their awkwardness, but over the years as the series developed and the cast changed the series became something different. That’s not to say the first few seasons were not absolutely brilliant. The fun of watching joyous teenagers be young and free, make mistakes and feel the pain of unrequited love. If you want to ride the rollercoaster of teenage emotions for all times sake, this is the one for you.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The timeless teenage coming-of-age drama is an absolute pleasure to watch 20 years later. On the one hand, it follows a group of high school students as they enter adulthood and come to terms with the august and disappointment they feel, but on the other hand it is also a thrilling monster series that brings out one hellish monster after the next. This series is one of the oldest that made it into the binge-watching, with loveable characters it’s never too old to be the focus of a series marathon.

This one is actually twisted. It follows a woman who in an unexpected way finds a woman who looks exactly like her. But it’s not only this one, she found more women who looked exactly like her, they all are clones. Together these women band together to find out their history and who made them. One of the things that make this series so good is the very impressive performance by Tatiana Maslany as she took on the roles of all the clones, Alison, Cosima, Sarah, Helena, Rachel, the list goes on. Her stellar performance and the numerous plot twists and character developments are what truly makes this series great.

Archer

This seven seasons long series has always been a popular option of binge-worthy series. Wonder why? It is consistently fresh, hilarious, stylish and surprising at times. This uniquely clever series follows an incompetent spy fumble through various ‘dark and dangerous’ missions, it never gets old. Creator Adam Reed is an incredible knack for reinventing the series each season, focusing on one arc for an entire season which is why it is so binge-worthy. It won’t be long before you’ve made your way through every season.

Bodyguard

The first episode is an absolute hook that holds you in your chair until the final scene of the last episode of the first season. This action-packed drama follows a metropolitan police officer assigned to guard a high-ranking government official at the center of a political terrorist crisis. The series develops quickly over the six episodes revealing much about the police officer’s personal life and making viewers question where his true loyalties lie. It’s a gripping political drama and with only six episodes, you can easily watch in one sitting if you want.

This rather irrelevant comedy is six seasons long and perfect for binge-watching, its sharp and unusual comedy makes it worth the watch. The series has had its ups and downs but over the years it has successfully gained a loyal following of binge-watchers. Centered around a study group at an unimpressive community college on the fringes of society, the series delves into various themes while still remains focused on its long-term arcs. It’s a perfect series for a fun night with friends.

Broadchurch (Season 1)

This series is one big cliffhanger. A young boy is murdered in a small English coastal town which makes the villagers question everything they know about their fellow community members. Faced with the investigation into who in this small community killed the boy, the community is turned on its head. What makes this series so binge-worthy is that it places the character drama before the crime story, focusing on the two detectives investigating the case and a distraught mother trying to keep her family together. We won’t say who did it, but what we can say is that you would never see it coming.

Futurama

This animated series is one of the all-time binge-watching series. With just as many standalone episodes as multi-episode arcs, this series never gets old. The hilarious science fiction backdrop makes watching several episodes in one sitting so easy. Each episode viewers are introduced to new worlds, new and strange characters and different science fiction themes throughout every season, and the pure likeability of the lead characters is how the series retained such a loyal following. This comedy series from Robert Carlock and Tina Fey is truly hip and deals with issues of PTSD and trauma in a comical way that is also very truthful. The West Wing

This 1999 drama series was not originally made for binge-watching but that does not mean it doesn’t fit the bill. The Office (U.S.) did not have a very good start when it first aired, but as viewers got used to the humor and cast it successfully made a turnaround in season 2. Now The Office (U.S.) is positively delightful and one of the most binge-worthy series currently on TV. The humor is completely golden, the characters are funny and lovable, and with Steve Carell’s unique and utter brilliant performance, you cannot go wrong. What’s fun about this series is that it is completely rewatchable and just as funny as the first time. It never gets old.
