Merkel says work remains for Western Balkan nations to join EU

German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave a mixed assessment on Monday of developments in countries of the Western Balkans as they try to move closer to the European Union. Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina all want to join the EU. There has been “light and shadow” in recent years, Merkel said in Berlin on Monday after the eighth Western Balkans Summit as part of the so-called Berlin process. “There is still a lot to do, but there has also been some progress.” She cited the fight against corruption as one example of the need for further action.
