Few media executives can trace a career that spans the highest levels of government communications, the formative years of a global cable network, and the operational command of one of the world’s most recognizable news brands. David Leavy has done exactly that — building a professional record defined by institutional scale, strategic precision, and a consistent presence at the center of consequential decisions.
From the National Security Council to Cable News
Before David C. Leavy became a fixture in media boardrooms, he served as Chief Spokesman and Senior Director of Public Affairs for the National Security Council in the Clinton White House. That role placed him at the intersection of high-stakes communications and national policy — a formative environment where messaging clarity, operational discipline, and credibility under pressure were not optional.
The skills developed in that capacity would prove directly applicable to the corporate arena. When Leavy transitioned to the private sector, he joined Discovery Inc., a network then in the early stages of building what would become one of the most expansive factual entertainment portfolios in the world.
25 Years Shaping Discovery and Warner Bros. Discovery
David Leavy spent 25 years at Discovery Inc. and its successor, Warner Bros. Discovery — a tenure that placed him at the table during several of the most significant chapters in modern media history.
As Chief Corporate Operating Officer of Discovery, Inc., Leavy was a central figure in the company’s public listing on the NASDAQ exchange in 2008, a milestone that signaled Discovery’s ambitions as a global media enterprise. He was also instrumental in the company’s agreement to acquire Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018, a transaction that reshaped the landscape of nonfiction television and expanded Discovery’s reach across lifestyle, food, and home programming audiences.
On the international stage, David C. Leavy played a significant role in Discovery and Eurosport’s agreement for rights to the Olympic Games across Europe — a deal that positioned the company as the primary home for Olympic coverage across the continent and demonstrated Leavy’s capacity to manage negotiations with global sports and media institutions.
Perhaps most notably, he was instrumental in the successful launch of discovery+ in 2021, the company’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform. Streaming launches of that scale require coordination across content, technology, marketing, and legal functions — a set of demands that spoke directly to the operational breadth Leavy had developed over two decades.
Corporate Affairs at Warner Bros. Discovery
Following Discovery’s merger with WarnerMedia to form Warner Bros. Discovery, David Leavy served as Chief Corporate Affairs Officer for the combined company. In that role, he oversaw an expansive portfolio: corporate relations, global government relations and public policy, corporate marketing and events, global communications, corporate research, and social responsibility.
Managing communications and policy functions for a company of WBD’s scope — with properties ranging from HBO and CNN to Warner Bros. film studios and DC Entertainment — required both strategic vision and operational command. Leavy held responsibility for how the company was understood, both externally by regulators and press, and internally as an institution navigating significant structural change.
Leading CNN Worldwide Operations
David C. Leavy currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of CNN Worldwide, overseeing commercial, revenue, operational, technology, and promotional operations around the world. The COO role at a global news organization of CNN’s stature demands fluency across business functions that most executives specialize in rather than manage simultaneously.
Leavy’s path to that position — through government communications, two decades of corporate leadership at Discovery, and a senior role at one of the most complex media companies in the world — reflects a career built on demonstrated operational and strategic capability rather than any single area of specialization.
Board Service and Academic Ties
Outside of his executive responsibilities, David Leavy maintains active commitments to the institutions that shaped his early development. He is a graduate of Colby College, where he now serves on the Board of Trustees. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Salisbury School, a position that reflects sustained engagement with educational leadership at the institutional level.
These commitments are consistent with a career that has moved between sectors — not simply ascending within one — and reflect Leavy’s involvement in governance and mentorship beyond the media industry.
