Nobody would have thought that one company would stand against Amazon’s plan. Yet Pinterest, the little start-up that is only 3 years old is fighting to keep at least one of the extensions. It claims exclusive right to trademark that have to do with the word “Pin”.

The pinboard website sent a complaint to the World Intellectual Property Organization, alleging that the acquisition of the word “pin” by Amazon would be a violation of trademark they hold. The startup company claims to hold the trademark for the words “pin” and a family of PIN-formative marks like Pinterest, PIN It, P and others.

It is quite surprising but it seems Pinterest is trying to copyright the letter P. And since when any person was allowed to own a word that already existed long time ago, the word “pin”?

In the meantime Amazon has also filed a complaint to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) that it should be given the right to claim “Pin”. Currently ICANN is investigating the dispute. At this point it wouldn’t be a surprise if Facebook should join in, claiming it owns the “Like” trademark. Seems online giant always have enough time and resources to fight over ridiculous issues. In the meantime other websites are also trying to make it by copying the giants. This is the case of manteresting which wants to be the Pinterest for men.

If Pinterest is for women then Manteresting is for men
After Pinterest was founded nobody knew that website would quickly grow to become an important player in the online world. According to a study by Pew in 20012 the pinboard website is now the 3rd largest social network after Facebook and Twitter. That is an impressive achievement considering the site is only 3 years old.

However, Pinterest seems to have a weakness. The overall complain is that it is dominated by a feminine taste. Some online entrepreneurs have taken advantage of the situation to come up with other websites designed based on the same concept but this time made to attract men. Example of such websites are Dart it Up, Dupepins, Punchpin and Gentlemint.

MANteresting is the latest to fill the gap when it comes to Pinterest-like website for men. This time the term nailing is used to replace pinning. Statistics are showing that 80% of Pinterest users are women. According to Brandon Patchin, the co-founder of MANteresting, his website has a place online considering the fact that after 12 months the site still gets a significant amount of sign ups.

Instead of fighting over trademarks, maybe Pinterest should focus on developing a strategy that will attract enough men on the website. The site also needs to find a quick way to monetize itself. Other websites like ShopInterest are taking advantage of the situation

ShopInterest extends free beta testing
ShopInterest is one of the 500 Startups-backed e-commerce site designed to help Pinterest users sell right from their boards. It’s been in beta testing for the past few months and has decided to prolong testing for 6 more months to get its SMB-focused selling solution straight. In addition the company has integrated an affiliate program to its platform referred to as “ShopInterest Sales Network”. It allows third-party sellers to also participate.

ShopInterest grew out of Pintics which was an analytics service for Pinterest users. Pintics eventually failed but the team behind it quickly learned that there was another opportunity to be seized and they launched a shopping website that could be integrated with the pinboard website. The team has decided to prolong its beta version to first improve on the service and attract more users. The co-founder Francisco Guerrero mentioned that they later plan to charge a fee for using the service but the price is going to be reasonable. They do not want their price to be as high as Amazon or eBay.

For now the shopping app has been charging $1 per successful transaction but when the website is fully launched they intend to charge between 1 to 3.5% of the amount transacted.

Pinterest is still trying to find a way to make money out of its own platform. It might not be a bad idea to just buy out ShopInterest. That may be the best solution.

Facebook statistics for smartphone users

Probably most will not be surprised to kow that 79% of smartphone users check their mobile device 15 minutes after waking up and gaain most (62%) don’t even wait for that 15 minutes. The survey was sponsored by the Facebook so most of the question had to do with users’ habits with respect to the social network.

The data from the survey showed that the Facebook app is the 3rd most popular after email and browser. That said 70% of smartphone owners do visit the site often and more than half of them come back to it every day. The peak social browsing happens in the evening before getting to bed and on daily average a Facebook fan spends about 2 minutes 22 second per session on the app that he visits 14 times a day so that is about 30 minutes a day.

Statistics have also shown that most of the time, while on the app, we are just checking the news feed to see what’s new. The rest of the time been fairly split between update posting and messaging friends. Half of the users may also play games on their phone from time to time.

It is probably not a coincidence that Facebook sponsored this study, the latest rumor been that the social network wants to launch its own phone.

Facebook invites press for an Android event
Facebook has sent invitations to the press for an event it is organizing the coming Thursday about an Android event to would take place at the Menlo Park campus. The invitation card say “Come see our New Home on Android”. Already a lot of tech journalists are predicting that it is going to be about the long awaited “Facebook Phone” that we’ve been hearing about all this time.

From the rumors, the social giant striked a deal with mobile manufacturer HTC to make a phone that would run a modified version of Android with a flavor of Facebook added to it.

The CEO, Mark Zuckerberg stated in an interview that it wouldn’t be a good strategy for Facebook to get into the phone war at least in the hardware sense but at the same time it would be a good idea to build a system that is integrated to any device loved by tech users. On Thursday the world will probably see Facebook make one more step in that direction.

The social network is also doing its best to improve interaction on the website and it has now added the reply option.

Facebook finally adds the “Reply” button to the comment section
This past Monday the social giant announced the rolling out of a feature that will allow users to directly reply to comments left on their page. It was about time.

It’s been months since Facebook started testing this “reply” feature. It wanted to make sure that navigation through conversation thread is easier. From this point on it is possible to reply to a comment without having to go down to the bottom of the comment section after many other friends’ reply. The users should be able to attend each comment and respond accordingly.

In addition to the that there is an algorithm that will give priority to more engaging comments that will tend to be moved up to the top of the post. For pages that tend to receive thousands of responses, the most interesting comment will be showcased.

In the past it has been quite difficult to interact using the comment box which was only based on chronological follow up. The conversation from now on is going to be much easier and even make more sense to new comers who might want to join in. The Facebook’s journalism program manager, Vadim Lavrusik said in an official blog post that the new rollout will make it easier to keep relevant conversations connected. The algorithm also introduced will make those conversations much more interesting.

For now the threaded reply is not yet available to all profile. It only appears on those with more than 10,000 followers. Brand Pages can voluntarily opt in if they don’t want to wait. Lavrusik added that for now this feature will only be available on desktops. In the future the team will see how possible they can integrate it to mobile and graph.

Pierson will take over the role of Mark Sullivan, the agent who was in charge during the Colombian incident. He retired in February and the event has been recorded as one of the worst in the agency’s history.

People have always criticized the Secret Service for being male dominated and the appointment of Pierson can be seen as Obama’s defense against criticism that his second-term picks seem to have given the priority to males when it come to high level posts with women ending up in lower levels.

Pierson was born in Florida and began her career in 1983 as a special agent with the Miami field office. She is chief of staff at the Secret Service for now. Her new appointment does not require the US senate’s confirmation.

In a statement, Obama said that Julia has what it takes to lead the Secret Service that is responsible not only for safeguarding US citizens at important events and the financial system, but also the country’s leaders and first families including his own.

It was in 1988 that Pierson got her first appointment at the Presidential Protective Division where she served for 4 years. In 2005, she was upgraded to the level of deputy assistant director of the Office of Protective Operations.

After the scandal of April 2012, the agency has been struggling to rebuild its image when it was discovered that its employees in Cartagena took prostitutes to their hotel rooms ahead of a visit by the president. The issue led to an official investigation from which it was concluded that the safety of the president was not compromised on that day. The scandal still remains an embarrassment to the agency.

Last year, the former Head of Secret Service, Sullivan presented his apologies to Congress concerning the issue. He said the agents’ behavior which he referred to as poor was not representative of the agency’ culture. A new code of conduct was put in place. Secret Service workers are not allowed to patronize “non-reputable” establishments nor use alcohol within 10 hours of duty.

After she was appointed, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said Ms. Pierson has a lot of work to do as she tries to create a culture that understands the importance of working in such an agency. He hopes she wins back the credibility that the Secret Service has lost.

Sullivan who was also present on Tuesday, stated that Pierson will excel in her new role, adding that he has worked with her for the past 30 years and this day should be seen as a historic and exciting moment in the history of the Secret Service. He believes Julie will do an outstanding job. Other Secret Service agents who know Pierson referred to her as being smart and experienced. The appoint of Pierson is also welcomed by key Democrats in Congress.

This is not the first time that Guccifier is credited for hacking into Gen Powell’s account. He previously hacked into the former Secretary of State’s Facebook account compromising emails sent to former-President George W. Bush that are believed to be sensitive. The hacker was able to uncover emails that made reference to Benghazi, the terrorist attack that took place in Libya. Allegedly those emails were sent to Hillary Clinton at the time she was the Secretary of State. This time Guccifer has released to RT a number of leaked emails reportedly sent to Colin Powell’s AOL account during the past few years.

The dozen of emails that RT received showcased what one would refer to as a little insight into Collin Powell’s daily habits except a particular one that made reference to important personalities and that raised a red flag. In an email dated March 21, 2012, News Corp executive Andrew Knight made it clear to Gen. Powell that it was important that Mr. Blair saw Bohemian Grove’s retreat as a priority on that year. The Bohemian Grove is an elusive gathering of rich and powerful people that take place every year. The gathering is so elusive that for decades many documentaries and books have been written about it. Journalists like Alex Shoumatoff who tried to infiltrate it ended up getting arrested.

The Sonoma County Free Press reports that every Republican US president since 1923 has been a member of the Bohemian Grove, including banking tycoons, titans of the defense sector and CEOs of large corporations. Spy Magazine was able to link important millionaires associated with IBM and Bank of America to the Bohemian Grove. The magazine was also able to link leading politicians in the White House and abroad to the grove. In 1989, a Spy name Philip Weiss was able to sneak into the grove and he confirmed that members gather around a 40-foot-tall owl shrine made of stone and steel, covered with moss.

The Spy added that he roughly saw about 2,200 attendees, all males during the busiest session of the gathering that lasted 2 weeks. On the letter Knight addressed to Powell, it was requested to the then Secretary of State that he makes sure Blair made it to that specific portion of the festivities. In the email, the news reporter requested Powell made it clear to Blair not to allow any other duty get in the way of the gathering. The journalist believed the UK Prime Minister of the time had not yet set his priority straight due to lack of exposure.

Prior to that Tony Blair had released a response letter the to the Bohemian Grove invitation explaining that his busy schedule may not allow him to find time for it. Apparently Knight didn’t want to see that as an answer.

Tony Blair is an acclaimed war criminal – opposition leaders in many countries have made it clear that they’d wish to arrest him and have him tried for crimes against humanity which he supported not only in Iraq but elsewhere too, whilst bankrupting the British public to fund his misadventures with their taxes.

During the press conference, Obama mentioned that “there is not a lot of daylight” with respect to the status of Iran’s nuclear program. He added that it was up to each country to decide whether or not they wanted to get involved in any kind of military action and the US is differently situated than Israel.

As for the Prime Minister he underlined the fact that Israel cannot give away its right to defend itself, suggesting a possible unilateral plan of attack if necessary. But Obama pointed out again that he is willing to rely on diplomatic means to deal with the Iran nuclear threat insisting that all options remain on the table but at the same time acknowledged that an Iran with a nuclear weapon would not be good news to the world. For that reason he wishes Iran meets its international obligations. He also showed confidence in the security in Israel considering the allies they have on their side. He added that the funding of the Iron Dome missile defense system will continue.

Obama stressed on the fact that America is fully committed to the State of Israel in a manner that is non negotiable. He ended saying, the key to a lasting peace in Israel is to make sure the Jewish state remains secure.

Aside the issue relating to the peace process, the Prime Minister expressed hope that with Obama’s visit to the region there could help improve the relations Israel has with Palestine. He went on stating, with the new government in place, Israel is willing to commit itself to peace and a solution for “two states for two people”. Israel extends it hand in peace to Palestine and is willing to put aside all preconditions and work hand-in-hand in order to put an end to the conflict by finding a compromise.

With respect to the Syrian issue, the president of the United States mentioned that their agencies are investigating into the matter to find out if they did use chemical weapons in the country. But in case they find out chemical weapons were used, Syrian President Bashar Assad will have to account for it.

Before the press conference a meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Obama, the military attache Yair Zamir and National Security Council head Yaakov Amidror.

After the press conference it is planned for the men to have a working dinner where the Israel Prime Minister will be joined by International Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon to talk about regional issues. Justice Minister Tzipi Livni will join them later in the meeting to discuss issues related to the Palestinian track.

The layout is much cleaner allowing much larger images to show as a result of the reduction of the space bordering the pins. In the same way, the profile pages have also been condensed to showcase more pins in a given amount of space.

Changes in the design put aside, Pinterest has also added new features that makes it easy for user to discover new things. When users look at a pinned image or video, related pins from the same board are shown on the right hand side. This way they don’t have to leave the page to see other pins. It also allows for the user to explore pins from the same site.

Not all users are seeing the new page layout for now but they can still choose to activate it voluntarily if they want to. Here are some few tips on how to navigate the new design.

Take note that even after rolling out the new design, the Pinterest team is still tweaking it slightly based on the feedback they get from their statistics so there might still be some new changes coming out.

From now on, when you click on an image, the size is much larger than before. If you are looking for the categories, look at the far left, you will see a red button next ot the search box. When you hover over the pin you will notice that the comment button doesn’t show up. You have to open the pin to be able to comment on it. When you open a pin it is much easier to go straight to that pin’s website and on the right hand side, you will see related pins.

Pinterest is also giving you more control on the notification feature by improving the layout of its settings page. It is now easier than ever to control when you should be sent an email about something ongoing on Pinterest.

There are features that have been removed. You can’t use hashtags anymore. You can’t take advantage of the linking feature either as you are only allowed to link only on your profile page. Links included on pins are no more functional. You can’t also use direct links to Pins on Pinterest, you will have to use the embed html provided. It is not possible anymore to tweet and pin all at the same time and the profile description has been limited to 160 characters.

One important brand new feature is the use of integrated web analytics. It is required to verify your business account to have access to the feature though. The current web analytic will show you the number of pins generated from your website and how many times they have been repinned, all displayed in a nice graphic.

The new features are only available on desktop for now but Pinterest’s lead product designer, Jason Wilson said they will soon be rolled out on Android and iOS platforms. There have already been new features that rolled out on iOS this Thursday adding the ability to edit profile right on the phone. On the iPad it gives a much closer view of the pins.

New ways to discover pins have also been included in this new update showing what other people have pinned. Now the users can scroll down indefinitely as the apps shows them related pins. The idea is to encourage accidental discovery. For the display of pinboards, it gets a bit awkward in the sense that users now have the ability to scroll through them in any direction, not just up and down but also left and right. This feature tends to be a surprise at the beginning but you will end up getting used to it.

Pinterest has been improving over time but it seems there are still some features missing. It is still not possible to message users on the platform. Pinterest should also find a more efficient way to allow users to recategorize their pins to another board. There is also a bug that causes pins to disappear. They are probably already working on that one. It would also be interesting to have a user list on which we can put the people we follow on defined categories in a way that allows us to filter our feed.

Pinterest still has a long way to go but it is getting there.

Who would have thought that the private banks in Cyprus would be affect by the crisis. Most people still want to believe that deposit insurance and private banks are untouchable. The reality seems to prove otherwise. The global elite have now made up their minds to go after any pile of money they can get. The financial system depends on the faith people have on it. If it loses that faith it will fail. But the global elite have designed a plan to kill that faith and cause fear and panic in the people.

In the long run, frightened people, for fear of losing whatever is left of their money in the bank, will go pull it out and rather invest it in gold and silver. As money moves out of the banks, the collapse becomes inevitable.

Politicians in Cyprus don’t really have the choice because they have been given 1 option, one not been better than the other. Either they allow the wealth tax to take effect and in the process kill the faith in the Cypriot banking system or they are forced out of the eurozone. What are the global elites trying to achieve with that?

Based on the report from the CNBC it is suspected that the elites are going after Russians who were very much involved in the Cypriot Banking System and used it in money laundering. Money flooding from Russia into the banking system in Cyprus was making about 25% of what the banks were operating with. It is obvious that the Russians are not happy with this new tax and even the president Vladimir Putin referred to the tax as “unfair, unprofessional and dangerous,”.

Now Russia is trying to save the day by offering money to Cyprus and completely fund the bank bailout. Cyprus, for now has rejected the offer but there is still a chance they change their mind.

But some European officials are already thinking of imposing the wealth tax to other nation in southern part of Europe. We can see where this whole thing is going.
